The new play of Stephen Adly Guirgis “The Mother With the Hat” is about the fight with addiction on a daily basis, in a down-to-Earth, real-life way. It is a thrilling, exciting trip to the facts about the nature of the human personality, and the strengths and weaknesses of people who consciously decide to quit or to pursue their chemical and alcohol addiction. The plot concerns the life of Jackie (played by
Bobby Cannavale) and his sponsor Ralph D. (played by Chris Rock) who face the need to handle Jackie’s rehabilitation. Jackie does everything he can to remain sober.

He nearly succeeds in the fight against the foes such as alcohol and chemical substances that change his behavior (maybe the tranquilizers) with the help of Ralph D., but his beloved woman Veronica (played by
Elizabeth Rodriguez) tears him from the internal struggle and seduces into consumption again. The reason for this dilemma is that Veronica does not perceive rehabilitation as a healthy tendency in her and Jackie’s life, and she despises those attempts, considering them self-betrayal. Hence, the work of Guirgis gives an alternative view on the concept of substance abuse and rehabilitation – the way they are perceived by proponents of abuse, and the argumentation used to save people from self-dilution. I liked the story very much, and the arguments of both Jackie and Veronica have convinced me to
